As the FIFA World Cup is held every 4 years, this means the next World Cup will be in 2026. This will be the biggest ever event in the history of Football. On 11th of June, the opening match will be played and the final is scheduled to be held on 19th July 2026.
It will be played in June and July, unlike the 2022 World Cup which was played in November and December. All teams except the host nations will play qualification matches from March 2023 to March 2026 to qualify for the finals. Argentina will play as a defending Champions as they won their third title in 2022 by 4-2 against France on penalties.
Which Country Will Host 2026 FIFA World Cup?
The United States, Canada, and Mexico will jointly host the FIFA World Cup 2026. For the first time in history, a football World Cup will be hosted by 3 nations. South and North America will jointly host the competition in these countries.
FIFA has also announced the hosting cities and stadiums for the final tournament. The opening game of the competition will be played at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca. The final will be played at the MetLife Stadium located in New Jersey.
It is expected that a total of 104 matches will be played throughout the next World Cup. Out of these 104 games, 78 games will be played in the United States, 13 in Canada, and 13 in Mexico.
The United States has already hosted a complete World Cup back in 1994. Mexico will become the first nation to host or co-host the tournament 3 times. Meanwhile, this is the first time Canada will be hosting the World Cup.
How many teams will play in 2026?
A total of 48 teams will play in the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time, a World Cup will be played by 48 teams, more than any previous editions. These 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of 4 teams each. The top two teams and 8 best third-place teams will qualify for the knock-out round which is Round of 32.
All teams except the host nations will qualify for the finals through FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers including the defending Champions, Argentina. As this is the expanded edition of the World Cup, 16 cities have been selected from the United States, Canada, and Mexico to host the matches.
